Misinformation and Disinformation: How to Spot Fake News

In this workshop, you will learn how to identify and sift through misinformation, disinformation, and fake news. Together, we will walk through several techniques for identifying false or misleading information, especially in online information sources. Attendees can expect to learn and use critical appraisal skills to evaluate online information and will be able to use these skills to evaluate scientific information throughout their academic programs and personal lives.

In this workshop participants will:

  • Summarize how misinformation, disinformation, malinformation, and propaganda is used in online information sources such as news articles and social media.

  • Identify information sources that contain misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.

  • Critically appraise and evaluate information sources for misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation.
