Designed for those hoping to enhance their research skills by taking their search capabilities to the next level, this education session will introduce you to advanced search techniques and strategies. Looking at several databases used in the sciences, you will explore advanced filters, subject headings, controlled vocabularies, advanced syntax, and other specialized tools to help you build a more effective search. You will also learn how to structure and record your searches for easy retrieval, editing, and methodological writing, as well as how to translate searches across databases. This session assumes you already have a basic grasp of searching and Boolean operators.
In this session, participants will:
- Learn how to identify the relevant search tools and syntax for a given database
- Learn the nature of several advanced searching tools (e.g.; controlled vocabularies)
- Learn how to structure a complex search
- Learn how to save and retrieve a search
- Learn how to translate a search across databases (and why search translation is necessary)
